Amos Kendall founded the Calvary Baptist Church on 2 June 1862. His donation for the construction of the building was about $90,000. When Kendall became a senior deacon in the church in June 1866, the construction of the building finished. A fire consumed the building after just 18 months of its completion. Kendall donated another $15,000 to rebuild the building because it was only insured for $50,000.
During 1983, the Calvary Baptist Church founded the Calvary Womens Services. It was the first ever womens shelter in the area of Washington Metro. They aim to empower homeless women in Washington, D.C. by transforming their lives through housing, health, education, and employment programs. Furthermore, they make sure that each woman have the educational support they need to take positive steps toward independence and the access to the proper trauma-informed healthcare. These programs include transitional and permanent housing, personalized case management, life skills, and education opportunities, job training, health and wellness services, on-site therapy and daily addiction recovery meetings.
